Composer Commentary

I have often been moved by Rosamond Herklots's text inspired by this petition from the Lord's Prayer. At the same time I wondered whether a tune more "forgiving" than the stern shape-note melody DETROIT might draw out more nuanced qualities within her stanzas. The rising and falling shape of this new melody suggests hands raised in yearning to God and then gradually folded back to the body. The setting as a whole moves toward an expressive climax in stanza 3, with the final stanza uttered as a fervent prayer for reconciliation and peace.
