Advent Awakenings: Organ Settings for the Season

Advent Awakenings: Organ Settings for the Season

The ten free style and hymn-based pieces that comprise Advent Awakenings speak to the exuberant anticipation of Christ’s birth. "Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying," a set of variations on WACHET AUF, was inspired by the resounding acoustics of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, where it was premiered. Even the quieter pieces evoke a spirit of contained joy. This volume should bring warmth of the season to both organist and listener.

Composer Commentary

I had written earlier collections published by Augsburg Fortress for both Christmas and Epiphany, but hadn’t yet explored the rich body of hymn tunes associated with Advent. What composer could resist scoring a new setting of VENI, EMMANUEL ? And doesn’t the Angel Gabriel with his trumpet call for a free-style trumpet voluntary? Even the lesser-known Advent tunes deserve a special place in organ literature. I hope the music in this volume will awaken the wonder and joy that embody the spirit of Advent.
